DESCRIPTION:On Monday\, October 20\, 2025\, Dr. Esme Shaller of UCSF will present a basic overview of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)\, a type of talk therapy for people who experience intense emotions. DBT is an empirically supported treatment for suicidal behavior\, self-harm\, and emotional dysregulation. She will discuss considerations for referral and ways to find care for the young person in your life who struggles with strong emotions. “This webinar is made possible by the support of Three Valleys Foundation and individual donors”\, said Alan Hu Foundation’s Co-Founder and President\, Xiaofang Chen. Simultaneous interpretation in Chinese and Spanish will be available during the live webinar. \nEsme A. L. Shaller\, PhD\, is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of California\, San Francisco (UCSF)\, which she joined in 2007. Both Dr. Shaller and the Wavefront DBT Clinic are certified by the DBT-Linehan Board of Certification. She is a past president of the International Society for the Improvement and Teaching of DBT. She recently published her first book\, Therapy-Interfering Behavior in DBT.
Dr. Shaller’s central passions are teaching and the dissemination of DBT\, particularly for adolescents and families. She devotes most of her time to teaching and training\, both within UCSF’s residency and fellowship programs\, and across California and the United States. She has worked with other members of the Wavefront team to implement comprehensive DBT for low-income teens in three Bay Area counties. Dr. Shaller received her bachelor’s degree in Psychology with highest honors from UC Berkeley\, and her doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the State University of New York\, Stony Brook. \nThe free webinar will be held on Monday\, October 20\, 2025\, from 6:30 – 7:30 pm PT via Zoom. SUMMARY:Helping Traumatized Children and their Families with Trauma Systems Therapy/A webinar by Glenn Saxe\, MD
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, November 18\, 2025\, from 5:00 – 6:00 pm PT via Zoom\, Dr. Glenn Saxe\, child and adolescent psychiatrist\, will present\, “Helping Traumatized Children and their Families with Trauma Systems Therapy” as part of the Alan Hu Foundation Mental Health Lecture Series. \nMany children experience traumatic events like injuries\, disasters\, war\, assaults\, and maltreatment both in the United States and around the world. These devastating experiences can put children at risk for serious mental health issues throughout their lives\, including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)\, depression\, substance abuse\, and even violent or self-destructive behaviors. This presentation aims to provide a perspective on how trauma affects children and their families\, sharing an approach that has helped countless people. Trauma Systems Therapy (TST) is an intervention method designed for traumatized children and their families. TST focuses on helping children develop greater control over their emotions and behaviors when faced with these reminders\, and guides families on how to support children in building resilience. Additionally\, TST addresses situations where children encounter real threats. \nXiaofang Chen\, President of Alan Hu Foundation\, is grateful to Three Valleys Community Foundation\, and individual donors whose generosity supports the series. “We are able to present leading experts in mental health with the most up-to-date research and resources. In addition\, we can reach a more diverse audience with simultaneous Chinese and Spanish interpretation during live webinars.” \nGlenn Saxe\, MD\, is a Professor in the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the NYU Grossman University School of Medicine and an Investigator within NYU Langone Health’s Neuroscience Institute. Dr. Saxe’s research has focused on determining factors that contribute to children’s risk for adverse outcomes following trauma and targeting factors using advanced computational data methods to lessen risk. Recently\, Dr. Saxe and his team received over 7.6 million dollars in funding from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health & Human Development (NICHD) to establish the Center on Causal Data Science for Child and Adolescent Maltreatment Prevention (the CHAMP Center). Dr. Saxe is also the director of the Center for Child Welfare Practice Innovation\, a National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN). \nThe free webinar will be held on Tuesday\, November 18\, 2025\, from 5:00 – 6:00 pm via Zoom. It will include 15 minutes for questions and answers following Dr. Saxe’s presentation. Please RSVP by November 17\, 2025\, at: https://alanhufoundation.org/lecture-series to receive the Zoom meeting link. Participants may join beginning at 4:45 pm PT. The Mental Health Association for Chinese Communities at https://www.mhacc-usa.org will provide simultaneous Chinese interpretation. Live Spanish interpretation will also be available. \nThe Alan Hu Foundation was created by Xiaofang Chen and Chih-Ching Hu in memory of their son\, Alan. He passed away due to mental disorders in 2018 at the age of 15. Their mission is to promote mental health\, raise awareness and remove stigma surrounding psychiatric disorders\, and to support fundamental research for cures. \nFor further information and to support the Alan Hu Foundation\, please visit the website: https://www.alanhufoundation.org/please-help
