SUMMARY:Discovery Dandiya Night
DESCRIPTION:Raas Garba / Dandiya Nights take place on weekends leading up to Diwali. Diwali is the biggest national festival in India\, celebrating the human ability to overcome adversity and the triumph of light over darkness. The Raas Garba folk dance brings people from multiple parts of India together in an important annual cultural and family event. Families and groups of friends assemble for a traditional garba (rhythmic steps in large circles)\, then dandiya or raas\, which is done in groups with small decorative sticks. No previous Raas Garba experience is necessary for participation. For those new to this tradition\, fear not! There will be skilled instructors on hand. Commemorative dandiya sticks are included with each paid ticket.

SUMMARY:Fostering Wishes’ Holiday Gift Drive for Local Foster Children
DESCRIPTION:As the holiday season approaches\, Fostering Wishes is gearing up for our 8th Annual Holiday Gift Drive\, a heartwarming program that lies at the core of our mission. Our commitment is simple: to enhance the quality of life for local foster children during their time in the foster system and to prepare them for self-sufficiency as young adults. The Holiday Gift Drive\, our inaugural program\, continues to symbolize our hope and love for local foster children. \nHow It Works:\nDuring the holiday season\, Fostering Wishes partners with local businesses to create “giving” trees. Individuals in the community can select a holiday tag from these trees\, purchase the requested gift\, and return it to the same business. Alternatively\, some businesses host displays with our flyer (see flyer below) containing a QR code. This code links individuals to our Amazon Wish List\, where they can choose and purchase gifts for foster children. The list also provides links to our Website and Instagram for more information about Fostering Wishes. \nThe Power of Giving:\nThese gifts are more than material presents; they carry a profound message to foster children. It’s a powerful affirmation that their community cherishes and values them. The significance goes beyond the tangible\, conveying a heartfelt message that they are not alone. \nCommunity Response:\nWhat truly sets this program apart is the remarkable response from the community. Thousands of gifts\, generously donated\, find their way into the hands of hundreds of local foster children. This outpouring of goodwill and support exemplifies the collective effort to make the holidays memorable for these young lives.\nWe invite you to join us in spreading joy and warmth to foster children in our community. Your participation can make a meaningful impact and create cherished memories for these deserving young individuals. \nFostering Wishes is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation. We are proud to be 100% volunteer-driven\, and all proceeds go to foster children!

SUMMARY:Goodness Village's The Good Neighbor Project: Empathy Unveiled
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Kim Curtis\, LCSW Director and Program Founder of Goodness Village \nThe Good Neighbor Project is this quarterly series where we will sit down with pillars in the community\, formerly unhoused individuals\, and others who want to change the current narrative around homelessness. Together we will break down barriers\, foster understanding\, and learn how to become better neighbors. Don’t miss this opportunity to connect\, learn\, and grow as a community. \nThis first discussion is called Empathy Unveiled. Our guest for this discussion is Aaron Horner\, a pillar in the unhoused community and the Executive Director of Community Outreach at South Hayward Parish. Through this discussion\, we will explore the pathways to understanding\, compassion\, and community connection. Together\, we can create a neighborhood where everyone feels seen and heard. \nHolding space for someone is an idea that is confusing for some and hard to do for others. Our tendency as humans is to offer up advice and fix things that are broken\, especially if someone that we love is in crisis. However\, there is power in simply holding space\, allowing someone a safe space to voice their concerns\, troubles\, or feelings. Sometimes it is too hard for us to carry things alone and it is imperative that we share some of it with others. Holding space for someone is a very simple idea but it is often much harder to execute. Simply put holding space means showing up for someone\, being fully present and without judgment as you sit with that person through their difficult time. You listen fully. You allow yourself to feel their pain and negative emotions so that they don’t have to do it alone. You allow your opinions or judgments to take a back seat as you meet someone exactly where they are at. Regardless of if you agree with their actions or whether or not you have an opinion on the situation\, you remain neutral\, empathetic\, and merciful. \nThe most important hallmark of holding space for others is creating a space where that person is fully seen\, heard\, and held. You don’t have to provide a resolution to their problem. You are not there to “fix” anything. You simply provide a space\, bubble\, container\, zone (whatever you would like to call it) where they can show up fully to be understood and heard by an unwavering ear. This is a space where others can feel safe and loved\, which allows them room to process difficult situations on their own timeline while feeling supported.

SUMMARY:Dopamine Fasting: A Neuroscience-Informed Approach to Compulsive Overconsumption in a Digital Age/Webinar by Anna Lembke\, MD\, Stanford University
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, March 8\, 2024\, Dr. Anna Lembke\, Professor of Psychiatry at Stanford University School of Medicine\, and chief of the Stanford Addiction Medicine Dual Diagnosis Clinic\, will present a webinar as part of the Alan Hu Foundation Mental Health Lecture Series. Her lecture is free to the public thanks to a generous grant from Three Valleys Community Foundation. \nDr. Lembke explains\, “This is a time of unprecedented access to high-reward\, high-dopamine stimuli: drugs\, food\, news\, gambling\, shopping\, gaming\, texting\, Facebooking\, Instagramming\, tweeting…the increased numbers\, variety and potency are staggering. As such\, we’ve all become vulnerable to compulsive overconsumption. Yet it is possible to find contentment and connectedness by keeping dopamine in check.” In this talk\, Professor Lembke provides a practical\, science-informed approach to addressing compulsive overconsumption of everything from food to sex\, to video games. \nHer latest book\, Dopamine Nation: Finding Balance in the Age of Indulgence (Dutton/Penguin Random House\, August 2021) was an instant New York Times and Los Angeles Times bestseller and has been translated into 30 languages. It combines the neuroscience of addiction with the wisdom of recovery to explore the problem of overconsumption in a dopamine-overloaded world. \nThe free webinar will be held on Friday\, March 8\, 2024\, from 12:00 -1:00 pm PT via Zoom. It will include 15 minutes for questions and answers following Dr.Lembke’s presentation. Please RSVP by March 7\, 2024\, at: https://alanhufoundation.org/ to receive the Zoom meeting link. Participants may join beginning at 11:45 am. The Mental Health Association for Chinese Communities at https://www.mhacc-usa.org will provide simultaneous Chinese interpretation. \nThe Alan Hu Foundation was created by Xiaofang Chen and Chih-Ching Hu in memory of their son\, Alan. He passed away due to mental disorders in 2018 at the age of 15. Their mission is to promote mental health\, raise awareness and remove stigma surrounding psychiatric disorders\, and to support fundamental research for cures. \nFor further information and to support the Alan Hu Foundation\, please visit the website: https://alanhufoundation.org/helping
